Complete Care for Arthritis, Bursitis & Tendonitis

What is arthritis?

Arthritis literally means joint inflammation, and it can affect joints in any part of the body. Arthritis is characterized by joint pain, swelling, stiffness and redness. Arthritis is not a single disease and has many causes. There are over 100 types of arthritis, rheumatic diseases and related conditions. And arthritis cases are expected to rise 50% in the United States the next 25 years.

One of the most common forms of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form of arthritis and one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. Seventy million Americans are plagued by arthritis, with more than 20 million affected by osteoarthritis.

What is bursitis?

Bursitis can develop when you overuse or repeatedly stress the areas around your body’s joints. You may eventually develop a painful inflammation. This is called bursitis.

There are more than 150 bursae in your body. These small, fluid-filled sacs lubricate and cushion pressure points between the bones, muscles and tendons near your joints. Bursitis occurs when a bursa becomes inflamed. When inflammation occurs, movement or pressure is painful.

Bursitis often affects the areas around the joints in your shoulders, elbows or hips. But you can also have bursitis at your knee, heel and the base of your big toe. Bursitis pain usually goes away within a week or so with proper treatment, but recurrent flare-ups of bursitis are common and can be frustrating.

What is tendonitis?

Tendonitis is a painful disorder of a tendon. Generally tendonitis is referred to by the body part involved, such as Achilles tendonitis (affecting the Achilles tendon), or patellar tendonitis (jumper’s knee, affecting the patellar tendon). It is now believed that tendonitis is caused by microscopic tears within the collagen matrix, which gradually weakens the tissue.
